Antique’s annual festival is called Binirayan and it literally means, “where they landed”. It recalls the story of ten Bornean datus who were led by Datu Puti and Datu Sumakwel. In the early 15th century, they fled from the oppressive rule of Sultan Makatunaw and their subsequent settlement in Panay. The Binirayan Festival is where Antiqueños re-enact the event through a pageant on the beaches of Malandog, Hamtic.
The Binirayan Festival is celebrated annually and it has progressed from a raucous revelry to a meaningful, although scripted street theater and is highlighted by several features: Biray, a fluvial parade, Bugal kang Antique Awards, Lin-ay kang Antique, Daigon Contest, etc. The festival showcases local finery, and it is a festival to see and be a part of. The festival aims to boost tourism and attract visitors to the province of Antique.
