This is Toto Alex. Tim’s nephew. Alex is the son of Tim’s older brother Nong Al. Although I haven’t met him yet I love looking at his photos and I particularly love this one. He’s smile is so infectious that by merely looking at him makes me smile as well. I hope it makes you smile too.

And I’m going to share this with the world! I have a crush on Angelina Jolie! She’s the greatest!

Aren’t they nice to look at? You have to agree with me on this. Or else.

I welcome August..

Its been a week since my last post here. I’ve been kinda busy. Too many things has happened already. I’ll just summarize them all here by date. I can’t describe everything that’s happened in detail because I still don’t have the ’time’ right now and I have to get some sleep before I start my shift tonight.

August 1 – Friday

Tim and I watched “The Mummy:Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.” It was a fairly good movie although Tim said it wasn’t as good as its predecessors. I agree with him. (I now have a little crush on Jet Li though.) ;)

August 2 – Saturday

Yey! The weekend! We had a very busy day- shopping and mall-hopping. :) I went with Tim to do grocery shopping at SM Delgado. Then we went to Marymart Mall to reserve a chocolate cake for my little brother – Rino John’s birthday. After that we went to Robinson’s Place. Tim bought himself a cool Portside shirt with these really witty line written on it. He then decided to buy me Havaianas slippers. At first I didn’t believe that he’d really buy me a pair. You know how much those Havaianas cost. But he did! There wasn’t any sold at Robinson’s so we went to Atrium Mall. I didn’t like the ones displayed there so off we went to SM City. (Whew! Around that time my feet were kinda aching but I didn’t mind. ) SM City was really crowded. We went inside these boutique called Flip Flops, they only sell Havaianas exclusively. Tim made me choose the pair I like. They didn’t have the beige ones that I wanted so I settled for the brown ones instead. After that we decided to go home. I’ll brag about what my bebeh did for me to everybody! How they’ll wish that they have a guy like mine. ;)

August 3 – Sunday

Rino John’s 10th Birthday! I spent the morning cleaning our house. Tim had lunch with us. He bought ice cream for Rino John. We cooked ‘tinolang manok’ for the dinner party. We went to church around 6pm. Then the party! Langging really enjoyed his birthday celebration, although his visitors were all ‘tigulang’ a.k.a. old people. Hahaha! The only kid present was Wewel, Tito Manny’s son. Dianne was there too. Dianne by the way is my brother – Severino’s (Toto RD) girlfriend. Nang Ting was there as well. She’s Toto’s sister at Singles for Christ.

Well..that was my very busy but exciting weekend. And I’ll be adding photos of my Havaianas and Rino John’s birthday when I have the time. I’ll be back soon guys. In the meantime. I’m back to bed. Zzzzzzz..

I still have the Mamma Mia bug!

Yep, I bought myself an ABBA cd and this really cool and cute ear cuff kind of earring like the one that Meryl Streep was wearing on that movie. After my shift yesterday, I met up with my bebeh for breakfast then we went to SM Delgado’s department store and browsed through the CDs on sale. I found this ABBA album which features a compilation of their greatest hits. My bebeh was actually supposed to upload ABBA’s hits on my iPod but too bad his computer chose this time to break down. So because Mary Jane just can’t wait to hear those phenomenal chart-toppers I promptly bought myself a CD. I went home and listened to it before going to bed (which pumped me up instead of mellowing me down..haha) I sang and danced a little to their music (yeah, a “little”). :)

I also bought this cool ear-cuff from Unisilver which is a curved band of metal that is pressed onto the helix of the ear. I have to pinch it hard to make sure that it stays in place (It was kind of painful at first but I got used to it eventually). I actually wanted my ear pierced at the helix and wear a stud or clip-on earrings but Tim won’t let me. He says I will look like a punk and people are going to think that I’m a drug addict or something. It has so many negative connotations.

Oh well, I just have to content myself with a “non-pierce” earring. Anyway its not that bad-looking right? What do you think? ;)

By the way, the butterfly earring I’m wearing was bought by my bebeh about a couple of months ago. Goes well with the ear-cuff. :)

ABBA and the Movie Mamma Mia!

I grew up listening to ABBA’s songs. Actually I grew up listening to the Beatles, the BeeGees, the Carpenters, Eagles, Chicago, Kenny Rogers, Dr. Hook and other popular bands in the 70s and 80s. My parents are big fans of classic country and rock bands, especially my father. The group I particularly like listening to is ABBA. I love their songs. Its not like the songs of today which have mostly ‘shallow’ lyrics. Their songs describe life. They talk about everything we go through everyday. People can “relate” to their songs. And I think that’s the reason why they became so popular during their time, that’s the 1970s and even up until now.

ABBA is a Swedish pop group composed of four members; two guys and two gals. They are Benny Andersson, Agnetha Faltskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Bjorn Ulvaeus. What I know about their group I learned from Papang. Benny Andersson actually co-produced the film version of the musical Mamma Mia! Thank God he did! :)

Mamma Mia made me feel good!

And based on Monica and the other movie-goers that watched the movie the same time as we did, they obviously enjoyed it too. And I based it on the reactions that I heard while Monica and I were on our way out.

We watched this movie last evening at SM City before our shift. I was with Monica because Tim’s at Cebu attending one of their company seminars. We opted for the last full show so we can come in on time for our shift which starts at 11 PM (Its 8 AM Pacific Standard Time). Mamma Mia! is a film adaptation of the West End stage musical, based on the songs of ABBA. The title of the film comes from the group’s 1975 chart-topper “Mamma Mia.” It was produced by Universal Pictures in partnership with Playtone and Littlestar.

Meryl Streep heads the cast of the film, playing the role of single mother Donna Sheridan. Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard play the three potential fathers to Donna’s daughter Sophie Amanda Seyfried. Imagine Meryl Streep’s “iciness” at The Devil Wears Prada and then imagine her singing, dancing and playing around. I really admire her versatility. And now imagine Pierce Brosnan’s “coolness” as the secret agent James Bond and doing the same things as Meryl in this movie. Plus Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard also romping around! God you’ll really get your money’s worth. I didn’t even know that these four actors can sing! Amanda Seyfried also did well as Sophie.

Today, I’m campaigning for everyone, particularly my officemates to watch this movie. They had to endure my ranting for the whole day especially Nang Cat and Abert who are both sitting beside me. Call me OA or whatever you like, basta nami guid ya ang Mamma Mia! ;)

You’ve got to watch it too to know what I mean and to know that I’m not over-exaggerating. You’ll miss 1/10 of your life if you won’t! ;)

Last Wednesday, Tim and I watched Wanted at SM City. We’ve seen Wanted’s trailer countless times before so I told my bebeh that when it comes out we really have to watch it! I’m not really a big fan of Angelina Jolie but still, I love the roles she play. Maybe its the ‘cool chick’ image, the “Don’t mess with me or else!” thingy that makes me want to watch her movies.

Anyway, Wanted is a 2008 action film based on the comic book series Wanted by Mark Millar. The film is directed by Timur Nuruakhitovich Bekmambetov, a Russian and Kazakh film and advertisement director. It stars: James McAvoy as Wesley Allan Gibson; Morgan Freeman as Sloan; Thomas Kretschmann as Cross; Konstantin Khabensky as The Exterminator; Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr. (better known by his stage name as Common Sense) as The Gunsmith; Marc Warren as The Repairman; Dato Bakhtadze as The Butcher; Terence Stamp as Pekwarsky; David O’Hara as Mr. X; Chriss Pratt as Barry; Kristen Hager as Cathy;and Angelina Jolie as Fox.

The story evolves around Wesley Gibson whose father left when he was just a week old. He has a job as an accounts manager which he hates. He suffers panic attacks which was later explained by Sloan that it is actually a very rare ability because when Wesley is under stress, it causes his heart to beat to an excess of 400 beats per minute, sending abundant amounts of adrenaline into his bloodstream. This allows him to see and react faster than normal. And Sloan tells him that his father also has this ability. He was recruited by The Fraternity-a thousand year old secret society of assassins and Sloan as the group’s leader invites him to join and follow his father’s footsteps. He didn’t want to at first but he had no choice because he was-as the reason for the title-wanted. Wanted by the police because of the damages he and Fox had done.

Then he woke up the next morning thinking everything was just a dream, only to discover that he still has his father’s gone given to him by Sloan. He discovers $3.6 million in his bank account. After that he quits his job after telling off his boss and knocking out his bestfriend’s teeth by slamming the keyboard into his face as he leaves. This friend was actually having a sexual relationship with his girlfriend.

He started training with the Fraternity at their headquarters which has a textile mill as a front. Now that he knows his father, he trained hard to avenge his death. He was taught to shoot, fight with knives and is desensitized to pain with regular beatings courtesy of the Repairman. The part of his training that I like the most is when he was taught by Fox on how to “curve the bullets” by slinging his gun in such a way that the bullet travels in a curve rather than a straight line. His training was very brutal, only endurable with the assistance of periodic medicinal baths that accelerate healing. After he completed his training, Wesley is given orders to kill people from The Loom of Fate, a loom that gives the name of the targets through a binary code hidden in the weaving of the threads. He refuses to kill his first assignment but Fox told him her life story, which helped him change his mind and do his assignments.During this time, Cross was evidently trying his best to kill Wesley. Wesley was curious to know who Cross really is after analyzing the bullet from his arm which was shot by Cross. It turns out that Cross was his real father and he was trying to tell this to Wesley, only the Fraternity got to him first. Pekwarsky was the one who told him all this after Wesley killed his own father. Cross was actually monitoring him all his life in the apartment opposite his. And the reason he left him when he was just a week old is because for him to have a normal life thats free of death and violence.

After learning the truth, he devises a plan to take out Sloan and the Fraternity. He filled a garbage truck with rats gorged on explosives-laced peanut butter and crashes the truck into the Fraternity compound and releases the rats. After the rats explode, he charges in killing all Fraternity members he encounters. Upon Sloan’s office, he finds himself surrounded by Fox and the other master assassins. Wesley tells them all that Sloan is killing for profit by providing his killers with fraudulent kill orders. He then attempts to kil Sloan, but is disarmed by Fox. She asked Sloan if what Wesley told them is true. Sloan then reveals that all of their names had come up in the weaving and that he had merely acted to protect them. He then goes to explain that if they truly believe in the code then they should all commit suicide right where they stand by putting the gun in their own mouths and pull the trigger. The other assassins decide to kill Wesley, but Fox turns on her fellow assassins. She curves a bullet to kill the assassins who had been standing in a circle, including herself. Sloan was able to escape.

Wesley, once again penniless does not know what to do with himself. A voice-over is then heard and a man is seen sitting in front of a computer in a cubicle that looks very much like Wesley’s. The man types the name “Wesley Gibson” into Google and searches for it but does not have any results, as in the beginning of the film. Sloan appears and points a gun at the man’s head. At that moment, the man turns around and is revealed to be a decoy. Wesley, who is actually several miles away, then shoots Sloan in the head.

This film  generally received very positive reviews from critics.

All I can say is that this line made me think:

“What the f*** have you done with your life lately?”

Are we all also in a dead-end, 9 to 5 desk job that we either tolerate or actually despise because we have to pay the bills even though our passion might be something else entirely that can’t pay for our living?

In my own understanding, Wanted urges us to find our own path that will transform our lives into one that’s worth living. We are to choose one where waking up and falling asleep every day isn’t all for nothing. Rather than just floating by, it is time to wake up and be alive!

Find and live your own calling.
